Arlene Laub, Associate Professor Emerita of Dance

In a letter to the Bard community, President Leon Botstein memorialized Professor Laub.

To the Bard College Community:

I regret to inform the Bard community of the passing of our colleague Associate Professor Emerita of Dance, Arlene Laub on January 21, 2024. Arlene died at her home in Piermont, New York following a long illness. She was 89 years old.

A native of Brooklyn, Arlene was a principal member of the 1950’s/1960s avant-garde Alwin Nikolais Dance Theatre at the Henry Street Settlement in New York City. Nikolais choregraphed movements specifically for Arlene which she performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

In 1965, Arlene began her teaching career at Bard as an instructor in dance, later becoming an assistant professor in 1967. For the next two decades, Arlene devoted her talents to her students in the development of modern dance technique and choreography. Arlene’s dedication and contribution to Bard will long be remembered.

On behalf of the entire Bard community, I want to extend to Arlene's family, as well as to her colleagues and friends, our heartfelt condolences.

Leon Botstein
President
